What we're reading: Mindsets & Equitable Education

As 2018 winds down at ASPDP, we're reflecting on the year and continuing to center our practice around equity. Join us as we strive toward our vision of providing an excellent education for all students by exploring some resources we're checking out this month.

 

Renowned researcher Carol Dweck identifies two mindsets that educators, administrators, and students can hold about intelligence and student outcomes. A fixed mindset, she defines, is a belief that intelligence is a static trait and that outcomes are predetermined by fixed abilities. Alternatively, a growth mindset is the view that intelligence and ability can be developed through effort and instruction.

In Mind-sets and Equitable Education, Dr. Dweck draws the connection between mindsets and equitable classroom experiences for all students. The mindset that educators hold and the mindset they promote in their students has a direct impact on student outcomes, especially in the case of students of color who face negative racial stereotypes. Fostering a growth mindset and messaging to our students our belief that every student is capable of growing and learning plays an important role in counteracting bias in the classroom and helping children fulfill their full potential.
