Course Description: Do you agree that every student deserves a fair opportunity to enjoy engaging science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities? Do you find it difficult to provide such opportunities in your classroom? Then you will find this course particularly helpful! This course, "STEAM-Powered Education for Every Student", provides teachers the research-based principles and practices for effective STEAM instruction for every student's benefit, in academia, self-image, and in future careers. Students are naturally scientists, technologists, engineers, artists, and yes, even mathematicians, and we can teach in such a way as to foster the mindsets, including curiosity, inquiry, hands-on learning, creativity, experimentation, critical thinking, and perseverance, to support students to succeed in all subjects, propelled by STEAM-related learning and growth. This course also addresses the inequity that exists, particularly in success in STEM subjects, between subgroups of learners, and ways to teach to provide increased equity in student achievement. Research will be presented and applied, specifically showing that on average, students who have access to authentic learning experiences in the sciences and in math, and who have access to the arts, are more invested in their education, have more motivation to come to school and to work hard, use more of their brains in the learning process, do better in all subjects, and are better equipped for demands of higher education, careers, and life. In order to support students' academic achievement and progress as well as their college and career readiness, this course provides 5 key factors for successful STEAM-powered education: 1) providing "3-dimensional" learning, 2) paying special attention to the context of the content and of the learners: making connections between the students community and lives and the content being taught; 3) arranging increased opportunity for academic discourse; 4) placing particular emphasis on student thinking and reflection; and 5) incorporating the arts into teaching and learning activities as much as possible.
