Course Description: How have the individual choices of New Yorkers shaped the city we live in? How has urban living shaped the experiences of people past and present? How can we lift up the voices of those in history whose stories have long been marginalized? And how do our own memories and experiences shape our understanding of ourselves, our students, and our world? Using a variety of engagement strategies, this course will foster empathy and understanding of the many different lived experiences of the people who have called and continue to call New York City home. The stories of individual New Yorkers will be the launching point for exploring the rich history of the city. Featured individuals will reflect racially and culturally diverse experiences and perspectives. To explore their own experiences and build their empathy muscles, participants will engage in personal narrative work and reflective exercises and discussions that will support participants as they explore their own narratives and share their stories with one another, modeling a classroom environment in which each participant is recognized as an expert in their own lived experience while they must simultaneously recognize the different and equally valid experiences and expertise of their fellow students. |
