P164-7395.1F18 - Crafting Evidence-Based Claims and Argumentative Writing

Course Details
Course Description:
Students are expected to develop well-written and coherent claims or arguments in most grade levels and content areas. This course provides the necessary foundation for all educators to provide students with the resources and learning experiences to cultivate stronger reading and writing skills that are essential in presenting an appropriate claim or argument. Participants will have multiple opportunities to design their own activities and instruction that incorporate the various aspects required for students to write claims and arguments. Participants will read and discuss differences between persuasive and argumentative writing, how to teach students to develop a claim or argument, the application of close reading skills when needed, the use of text or questioning techniques as prompts, extrapolating quality details as supporting evidence, the use of graphic organizers as a tool in this process, creating appropriate tasks for students to utilize these skills, and strategies to improve student writing through the use of peer-editing and a rubric. In addition, the feedback provided from the course instructor and peers will allow participants to modify instruction to reflect their students' needs.
