P019-13491.1M25 - PAPER MAKER- STEAM Across Curriculum, Designing and Constructing with Paper

Course Details
Course Description: This course is designed for teachers who are interested in offering their students a deeper investigation of engineering and design through project-based learning by using reusable materials. This course will introduce educators to teaching practices linking arts integration and the Five Core Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies and the Six Pillars of a Brave Space, exploring alternative materials that represent and affirm student identities: creating independent works for self-awareness examination, independent thinking and problem solving, time management in designing and completion of artworks through setting and achieving positive goals; creating social awareness by sharing feelings and showing empathy through collaborating on projects and conducting positive critiques for relationship skill development within a culturally responsive sustaining context. Participants create hands-on art projects that reflect the individual’s unique cultural experiences. Once daily projects are completed, the work gives voice to the creator as each participant is given equal time for presentation of experiences, beliefs, and traditions in both small and large group share outs. It is in this daily setting that truly organic authentic conversations are held, participants come to the awareness that art making is a useful tool for creating works that can be used to better understand themselves and their student population. This course infuses STEAM through Project Based Learning into CR-SDP, using the 7 principles, educators are provided asynchronous time to explore materials and create projects that they can integrate into Inclusive Curriculum Units of study, using the experiences and perspectives of multiple, non-dominant voices to explore identity, power and bias found in traditional teachings of STEAM and to question their own belief system and to observe inequities found within the classroom and without. Art and Technology become the vehicle to design a student-centered approach to building a brave new learning community, integrating critical consciousness as the lens to disrupt bias and embrace diversity, affirming students’ cultural experiences as an essential tool for a more informed understanding of individual student learning to provide relevant rigorous content instruction and goal setting. Participants will be introduced to a series of art lessons that they then are given time to modify/expand upon both for the classroom and online teaching, exploring histories, languages, and experiences of traditionally marginalized voices to highlight and familiarize with their student’s cultural identities. Educators use various strategies of differentiated instruction to create and present achievable equitable projects, designed to inspire students to pursue a more student-led curriculum and leadership opportunities within and without the classroom setting.
