Course Description: This course is designed for teachers who are interested in offering their students a deeper investigation of engineering and design through project-based learning by using reusable materials. This course will introduce educators to teaching practices linking arts integration and the Five Core Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies and the Six Pillars of a Brave Space, exploring alternative materials that represent and affirm student identities: creating independent works for self-awareness examination, independent thinking and problem solving, time management in designing and completion of artworks through setting and achieving positive goals; creating social awareness by sharing feelings and showing empathy through positive critiques developing culturally responsive sustaining context. Participants create hands-on art projects that reflect the individual’s unique cultural experiences. Once daily projects are completed, the work gives voice to the creator as each participant is given equal time for presentation of experiences, beliefs, and traditions in both small and large group share outs. |
