| Course Description: Learn to develop your students’ capacity to effectively express themselves, in academic discourse and public speaking! This course addresses “a crisis in American culture: without voice, participatory democracy fails….” Chavez (2021, p. 11), heightening critical consciousness of course participants to lift EVERY student voice through academic discourse, debate opportunities, spoken word, speech-giving, and more. Silencing hurdles are addressed, including systemic oppression, English proficiency levels, fear of public speaking, and more, to provide more equitable opportunities and accessibility to the critical academic/life skill of effective oral expressiveness. Freedom of speech is a basic human right, a critical component of our society and democracy, and can literally change the world. The skills requisite of effective public speaking can be developed over time through instruction and opportunities to practice. Students are best served when the opportunities begin in their young years – even before students can read – and such opportunities are particularly important as students face and actively participate in societal challenges and issues of controversy. Students’ voices should be heard, and they should be supported in finding their voices and learning to articulate their views, ideas, and knowledge, that are also informed through attentive listening and reading. The content of this course is not limited to any particular content area – in fact, communicating ideas effectively is a critical component of every area of discipline. Course participants learn ways to most effectively groom their students of any age to speak up, speak out, and effectively, civilly, and constructively negotiate with others of different persuasions. |
