Course Description: In this course, participants develop an increased awareness of the need both nationally and locally to capitalize on the assets of multilingual, ENL students, and to meet their particular needs, based on data and research. They identify personal and institutional beliefs and practices that contribute to inequity, as a step toward increasing equitable attitudes and instructional approaches. They examine ENL standards in their particular state, as well as instructional shifts from traditional approaches to alternative approaches, particularly through the use of technology for increased equity, specifically in the achievement of English learners. They learn to foster academic interactions, specifically academic conversation skills. They practice technology usage and create definite plans to incorporate specific tools into ENL lessons to create and increase authentic opportunities for students to interact in meaningful ways. Key deliverables include: written responses reflecting participants’ analysis of ENL demographic data, current ENL state standards, and instructional practices; practice of, and reflection about, constructive academic conversations and technology tools in the classroom, specifically to promote ENL mastery; creating a lesson plan that incorporates learning into classroom practices with a specific focus on increasing equity; course summary with practical application and reflection, including the creation of a multimedia presentation with a focus on promoting increased equity in education and achievement - specifically of English learners. Application of content has been added for more equitable and effective practices in online and blended learning environments. |
