P239-9925.1S21 - Authentic Advisories: Building Advisory Communities to Support Students

Course Details
Course Description: April 10th, 11th, 17th, 18th 10am-3pm. This four-day hands-on virtual intensive will teach educators how to create and sustain strong advisories where middle school and high school students are free to develop their authentic selves. Participants will learn how to establish a community of trust and rapport and develop strategies for supporting their student’s social-emotional development. Participants will review best practices for providing academic support and learn how to help children advocate for themselves as individual learners. Importantly, participants will have multiple opportunities to reflect on their own identities as well as the identities of their students and to investigate how these identities interact in an advisory setting. Participants will discuss ways to respond to and support the diverse range of backgrounds and perspectives New York City children bring into the classroom, particularly black, indigenous, and students of color and LGBTQ+ students. Together, we will co-design specific processes for each participant’s individual work and help them build a plan for implementing this approach. Our work is based on the research of CASEL, The Center for Emotionally Responsive Practice at Bank Street College, Dr. Brian Goldman, Peace Learning Center’s Restorative Justice Practices, and Zaretta Hammond’s work on Culturally Responsive Teaching. **We will be sending you a package of materials to help you with this course. In order to receive your materials on time, please register as soon as possible. **
