Course Description: Understanding the diverse needs of New York City students requires educators to employ a variety of intentional strategies to support student academic and social-emotional needs. This course defines a mindful, engaged pedagogy and explains how establishing a personal mindfulness practice can support teachers in all these areas including classroom management and self-care. Additionally, the course offers classroom video and personal practices to help teachers establish a sustainable and consistent personal practice. This course will end by delineating different implementation strategies teachers can use to create a sustainable, mindful classroom culture that values diversity and inclusiveness. Participants will assess the ways they currently support healthy relationships and communication in the classroom as well as on teaching and learning experiences they consider successful. They will gather this information throughout the course and use it to evaluate how mindfulness can support them, student learning, and ultimately their school. By the end of the course, participants will create an action plan to implement mindfulness practices and activities into their classroom routine to support planning and preparation, the classroom climate, classroom instruction, critical inquiry, and in meeting their professional demands. The action plan will also ask participants to self-assess ways mindfulness supports reflection, classroom instruction, and student learning. |
