Course Description: This course is designed for teachers to integrate music into the classroom through fun and simple techniques, learning basic concepts found in music while designing a series of hands-on indigenous inspired instruments made from reusable materials to experiment on and compose rhythms with. This course will introduce educators to teaching practices linking arts integration and the Five Core Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Competencies, exploring alternative materials that represent and affirm student identities: creating independent works for self-awareness examination, independent thinking and problem solving, time management in designing and completion of artworks through setting and achieving positive goals; creating social awareness by sharing feelings and showing empathy through collaborating on projects and conducting positive critiques for relationship skill development within a culturally responsive sustaining context. By providing a global immersion into the study and production of music, participants can use their personal experiences, the diverse culture of the school’s student body and reference numerous compositions from around the world as effective ways to explore SEL and CR-SDP for a deeper understanding of the school culture and the global community. Participants create hands-on art projects and musical recordings that reflect the individual’s unique cultural experiences. Once daily projects are completed, the work gives voice to the creator as each participant is given equal time for presentation of experiences, beliefs, and traditions in both small and large group share outs. This course infuses Project Based Learning into CR-SDP, using the 7 principles, educators are provided asynchronous time to explore materials and create projects that they can integrate into Inclusive Curriculum Units of study, using multiple, non-dominant voices in research as resources to explore identity, power and bias found in traditional teachings of literacy, math, science, and social studies. Art and Technology become the vehicles to build a brave new learning community for integrating the concepts behind critical consciousness as the lens to disrupt bias and embrace diversity for a deeper understanding and respect for all individuals in the classroom, school, and community. Participants will be introduced to a series of art lessons that they then are given time to modify/expand upon both for the classroom and online teaching, exploring histories, languages, and experiences of traditionally marginalized voices to highlight and familiarize with their student’s cultural identities. Educators use various strategies of differentiated instruction to create and present achievable equitable projects, designed to inspire students to pursue a more student-led curriculum and leadership opportunities within and without the classroom setting. This course highlights cultures around the world, musical influences, exploration of sound and theory, and musical writing and presentation. Sessions include: 1). Multicultural Introduction to Music 2). Asian and Middle Eastern Music 3). African and Latin Music 4). Group Studio Art and Composition; 5). Studio Art and Composition; 6). Oral Presentations and Peer Assessment. |
